Unfolded is a body of work where Layla explores the possibilities of paper as an artisan refining her craft.

Layla’s fascination with Italian ceilings led her to consider how stone reliefs could be translated into paper. She became interested in the similarities between artisans working with different materials.

 Taking inspiration from the patterns and motifs she has encountered throughout her life; Layla manipulates the paper into sculptural reliefs. Using only glue and a scalpel, she is able to challenge the audience’s perception of paper, evoking comparisons to fabric and porcelain. The paper becomes malleable as Layla curves and ripples its shape, giving the paper a whole new characteristic.
